In our “Freaky Friday” column we step outside of our tech boundaries once a week and bring you some of the more … flamboyant examples of shanzhai culture! Gottag love shanzhai innovation! Marquis Mills Converse, who was previously a respected manager at a footwear manufacturing firm, opened the Converse Rubber Shoe Company in Malden, Massachusetts in 1908. The company’s main turning point came in 1917 when the Converse All-Star basketball shoe was introduced. What he couldn’t have imagined then was that one day more than 80 years later his shoe designs would be so iconic that they would get the shanzai treatment.
